Ellis & Winters LLP
Greensboro, North Carolina, United States
Dixie Wells is a partner at Ellis & Winters LLP, and is located in the firm’s Greensboro, North Carolina office. She is a civil engineer with a master’s degree in systems engineering, as well as an attorney, making her particularly well-suited for representing clients faced with construction and structural engineering catastrophes. Dixie often represents clients in matters that involve engineering issues, including representing Pfeifer Holding GmbH & Co. in the collapse of pedestrian bridges at Wake Technical Community College, Anti-Hydro International, Inc. in litigation arising out of the collapse of a pedestrian bridge at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, and Siemens Energy, Inc. in litigation arising out of the collapse of a temporary lifting device being used to lift a one-million pound stator.
Though it may seem unconventional for an attorney to enter the practice of law from engineering outside of the patent law context, Dixie’s journey from engineering to nationally-recognized litigator makes sense when considering her unique path along the way. Following graduation, Dixie worked as a research scientist for the Virginia Transportation Research Council and obtained her Professional Engineer license in North Carolina. Realizing that she would need a Ph.D. to advance and given her passion for the “policy” side of her work, she decided to pursue a law degree instead, graduating with honors from Wake Forest School of Law. After a federal clerkship, Dixie so thoroughly enjoyed the practice of law that she decided to pursue a litigation career.
